Community radio stations and a local news service are being re-established on remote islands in the Torres Strait under an ambitious plan to create a regional radio network.
The chain of studios and transmitters will also broadcast into southern parts of Papua New Guinea and provide a vital emergency service if the region is hit by natural disaster.
Some of the islands between Cape York and PNG have no mobile reception and recent telecommunication outages have left them offline from phone and internet services for days at a time.
Torres Strait Island Media Association operations manager Jaan Torv spoke with Queensland correspondent Stefan Armbruster about the revival of 4MW regional service.
